Male Bettas, unlike females, cannot be housed together in the same aquarium as they will fight to the death with each other.
Bettas are hardy with proper care. An individual betta can be housed in a 1 gallon (3.8 L) aquarium that has good filtration and maintains an ideal temperature of 75° to 86°.
When setting up a community tank with a betta be mindful that more aggressive fish may nip at the betta's fins and that it is good practice to have a tank of at least 20 gallons (75.7 L).
